There was a post by Humans of New York a few years ago that recycled and hit my feed last week. I found it rather inspiring, and it’s a good mantra to be extrapolated toward photography in general.

Here’s the quoted post:

“Mary is 93 years old. We spoke for less than two minutes. After I took her photo, she said:

“If you force yourself to go outside, something wonderful always happens!”

New life motto…

Last weekend I didn’t know what to do, but I wanted to do something fun.  And, it was this quote that got me rolling out the door! We ended deciding on a whim to head to Canaan Valley and cross country ski at White Grass. By happen stance, White Grass was having a Hash Ski! …similar to a Hash Run, but on cross country skis.

Foto tip Friday – work flow 101

Rename your photos!

Rename your photos

Don’t leave the file name DCS12345….

This has been a large contributor to how my photos get discovered…a simple file name.

While it’s great SEO to have meta data, alt tags, and keywords embedded in your images, if the file name is still a group of seemingly arbitrary letters/numbers that your camera assigned the photo, then you’re missing out on a lot of organic traffic to your work.

Here’s an example file name of the photo above: Cypress_Trees_Cat Island_Louisiana_photo by Gabe DeWitt_November 5 2014-19.jpg

Programs like Adobe Lightroom and Bridge can batch rename photos quick and easy (there are also some open source standalone apps for files renaming)….though I recommend Lightroom!
